Operations Manager

New Zealand Comedy Trust

Job details

New Zealand Comedy Trust
15 Jul 2022
Work type
Full time employment, Fixed Term
Work classification
Management & Admin, Performing Arts

The New Zealand Comedy Trust was established in 1995 to manage the NZ International Comedy Festival and foster the growth of comedy as a performing art and professional career in New Zealand.

A celebration of comedy, the annual NZ International Comedy Festival has grown into one of the most loved events of its type in the world. A major event on the nationwide calendar, it is held simultaneously over three weeks across Auckland and Wellington during May, with a total attendance of up to 90,000 each year.

The Operations Manager is key to the success of the Festival and is responsible for the facilitation, coordination and effective operational management of the NZ International Comedy Festival, as well as other New Zealand Comedy Trust events and industry development initiatives, both within the Festival and throughout the year.

You will lead an Operations team including the Production Manager and Ticketing Coordinator, so knowledge of these areas is required. Relationship skills are paramount as you will be the key contact for our amazing venue partners and suppliers. Previous Festival experience is highly desirable.

We work collaboratively as a small team and bring on additional staff for the Festival season, so this is a very hands-on role where you’ll need to work across all areas of operations. Key responsibilities include relationship management, budgeting, scheduling and logistics, health & safety, compliance, ticketing, contract negotiation, reporting, and production administration.

To succeed in the role you will have:

  • Previous experience in arts or event management, including producing live events/shows.
  • Excellent budgeting, scheduling and administration skills.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines and to work effectively under pressure.
  • Understanding of delivering events with strong emphasis on health and safety, with an ability to respond effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
  • A collaborative approach with a high level of initiative, self-motivation and enthusiasm.
  • A passion for comedy and live performance.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced event manager to join a small team in making a vital contribution to the comedy industry in Aotearoa. You will work directly with comedians, producers/promoters, venues and technicians to deliver a fantastic Festival experience for audiences and artists. Directly reporting to the General Manager, the role works collaboratively alongside the Creative Producer and Marketing & Partnerships Manager on programming and general operations delivery of the Festival and Trust initiatives, to bring the event to life.

The NZ Comedy Trust aims to elevate New Zealand comedy as a celebrated and integral feature of the arts sector. We create opportunities to develop, promote and grow a sustainable and representative comedy industry in Aotearoa. At all levels of programming and within our team, the New Zealand Comedy Trust champions the values of representation, contributing to a culture of inclusion and celebration.

This is a fixed term position running from August 2022 to August 2023, but we are open to looking at a permanent position for the right person.
