Are you passionate about mental health and creativity? Are you keen to see whānau thrive?

Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu:  Adorn the bird with feathers so it can fly.

Help shape an innovative organisation which uses the power of creativity to change lives.

Ōtautahi Creative Spaces Trust is a peer creative community in Christchurch which is recognised nationally for its impact.  Creativity is used to connect with whakapapa, foster skills to develop and present work with confidence, and build relationships through connection and collaboration.  We deliver our creative programmes from our studios at the Phillipstown Community Hub, across creative venues in central Ōtautahi, and through online spaces.

It has been a privilege to encourage people experiencing mental distress to redefine their mental health journey as artists over the last seven years. We are now entering a new phase of growth as an organisation with funding from Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage to increase services to Māori, Pacific, Muslim and Rainbow communities.  Our strategic priorities include building our cultural competency as a team, securing premises that offer growth potential, expanding our network of support and advocacy in the arts and business communities, and working towards long term sustainability by diversifying investment.

We are looking to strengthen our governance board with two trustees who can support us to:

  • Develop our cultural competency and understanding of partnership under the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Build relationships and networks  to increase access to creative services for people experiencing inequity in health care
  • Increase long term sustainability through diverse investment streams

We welcome candidates with governance experience, or those who are keen to develop governance skills in a supportive board environment. Applications from young people and people with lived experience of mental distress are welcomed. We also invite applications from people who bring experience in the role of chairperson, or people who would like to gain experience in a co-chair role.

Board commitment

  • The Board meets monthly and we ask for up to five hours’ work per month outside of board meetings.
  • Board meetings can be held both in person and on Zoom so we are open to applications from people both inside and outside of Ōtautahi.
  • We are looking for people who are able to commit to a two year term or more, to lead Ōtautahi Creative Spaces through the next exciting phase of its development.

How to apply

Please forward us an expression of interest by 31 July 2022.  This should include a letter telling us about what you would bring to this role, your cv, and the contact details of a referee, kaumatua or support person who has seen you in either a governance or leadership role.
